How To: Saddleback Leather Waxed Canvas Fire Starter Kit

Dave’s video on starting a fire Saddleback Leather Style

Video Transcript:

I want to show you the Waxed Canvas Fire Starting Kit, this is super cool. This is like my Passport Wallet that I use except that I use it in Leather. If you want to impress everybody – start a fire without a match. So here’s what you do:

firestartingGet the scraper here and scrape of a little bit of wood off the handle. The reason this is better to use is at high elevations a lighter doesn’t work. You can use matches, but those get wet. But this will work.

Then scrape on some magnesium that burns hotter than the wood. Scrape your pile together in one spot. Then strike the flint to catch it all on fire.

Then you can add on other kindling as you go along and you’ve got your fire going. Pretty cool.

You can also add a piece or two of the waxed canvas scrap that is included in the kit and it will burn like a candle. It doesn’t matter if you went swimming and it’s all wet, it will burn. (Make sure to follow proper fire starting techniques, unlike Dave did) It will burn like a candle for awhile.

So this is how you start a fire Saddleback Leather Style.

This also works at night, if you need some light while walking the trail, just strike the flint and lights the trail if your light is out. Or you can also use it for emergency signaling. If you are up on the hillside at night, people can see you. It’s an all around good thing to keep in the glove box for those just in case instances. Hopefully you never have to use it, but hopefully you do.

The Fire Starter Kit was also just featured on the blog, Things that Make People Go Awww.  If you need to impress someone or just have a backup plan for fire with you, the Waxed Canvas Fire Starting Kit is the way to go.
