As Father’s Day draws near, it makes me think about gifts and items and the meaning we assign to them. Those precious few items that a Dad will pass to his child that will represent dear memories long after Dad has left his earthly tethers. They don’t necessarily have to have been extremely rare and expensive, but the mere fact that Dad used it every day is enough to make it priceless to his children.
At Saddleback Leather we feel that all of our items are made to last more than a life time and are tough enough to be able to stand up next to some grand legacies. Our slogan, “They’ll fight over it when you’re dead” adds a cheeky take on the idea of passing a legacy but the sentiment is still there. We hope to be a supplier of an item that will be a legacy, not just of leather and canvas, but a symbol of someone’s hard work, innovation, consistency and love.
There is a commercial out there by the watch company, Patek Philippe, that shows the relationship of a Father and Son and ends with the phrase “You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely take care of it for the next generation.” While the things of this earth will pass and you can’t take them with you, sometimes you can instill a legacy in a few quality items that’s bigger than bits of metal, leather and other fine materials. They can be a reminder of Dad’s more important legacy, his love and care of us and a guidepost of the lessons Dad gave us. This Father’s Day is a great time to bestow a gift that will hopefully be the container for many memories and a beautiful legacy that can be passed on to the next generation.
If you’re looking for a few ideas, these items would be a lovely way to start a legacy:
